Who loves a good charm bracelet? I do! Ever wonder how charm bracelets came about? Well here’s a little history to help you out. Wikipedia describes charm bracelets as:
A charm bracelet is an item of jewelry worn around the wrist. It carries personal “charms”: decorative pendants or trinkets which signify important things in the wearer’s life.
Here are some interesting facts regarding charm bracelets:
1. Charm bracelets have been around since pre-historic times. The wearing of a charm or amulet may have started as a way to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. Initially charms were made from clay, shells or animal bones and eventually, wood gems and stones were incorporated into the bracelets.
2. Queen Victoria wore charm bracelets which started a fashion fad amongst European nobles. So, not only did she influence architecture, she influenced fashion as well! Apparently she loved to wear and give charm bracelets.
3. Tiffany and Co. introduced their first charm bracelet in 1889. It was a single link chain with a heart charm. This design is still in their collection today and is an iconic, signature piece of jewelry for the brand.
4. In the 1950s and 60s it became very popular for teenage girls to mark important events, trips and hobbies with a charm bracelet.
Charm bracelets have become a classic staple piece in just about every woman’s wardrobe. There are so many varieties to choose from. You can find great bracelets with just one fabulous charm or bauble, or a packed vintage charm bracelet that was collected over the years and perhaps handed down to you, or you can buy a great costume jewelry charm bracelet with its own unique theme or signature of your favorite designer.
